Day 52: Travel, family, and party.

It was a 3 hour plane ride. I got up once to stretch my back. I went home, played around with my nephews, conducted a 2 hour barbeque, snuck around the back of the house to scare some people, and went to bed at 2am with only minor aches that settled in 2 minutes. The next day my friends invited me to a party at somebody's house.. I sat around, had more drinks than I should have, and then went out with a large group of friends to a club. I'll be honest here, I got really drunk, started dancing around, even jumping sometimes, met a wonderful girl that I want to marry, and got home at around 6am. VERY IRRESPONSIBLE. But luckily, I had absolutely no pain the next day. In fact, I've never felt this good in my life. I used to always have back pain and numbness the day after partying, and now my back feels solid and painless. I took an unnecessary risk, something I absolutely don't recommend, but I couldn't stand being in the house anymore. And it seems my back is almo

Week 6 (Day 42): The Magical Milestone

I am officially 6 weeks post-op and boy do I feel great! I'll do a recap of this past week first: 6 Days ago I started feeling strong pains in my lower back.. It was basically body-aches with a focus on my lower back. A few hours later I started getting a very high fever. That night my sister called me and asked me if I had a fever as well. We had eaten at the same restaurant the day before and the food made us sick. In a way, this was a relief for me, since the body aches were part of the sickness. 2 days later the fever stopped and everything came back to normal, which in my case is a 1-2 pain level. (This was the reason for the spike in pain on the right-side pain log. I decided to go back to the gym and I started more strenuous exercises 2 days ago. I walked on the treadmill, this time uphill at a 4-6 degree angle and at 3-3.3 mph (around 5 kph) for 30 minutes. Then I got on the stationary bike and sustained a 170 bpm (heartbeat) for 10 minutes, which really got me sweating

36 Days Post-op: Some setbacks

Hi everyone! A little over 5 weeks post-op.. I decided NOT to attend the Andrea Bocelli concert last night. My back started acting up a little before that and I decided not to piss it off anymore. It was definitely a good decision. Today I sat down at a restaurant for a little over an hour and a half and then did a little bit of shopping. Everything was great, my back taking it great, but then I could feel it upsetting a little after 2 hours. As you can see, I still have my limitations, but it's completely normal. I am, afterall, only 5 weeks post-op. I believe my back started acting up when I found out my sister was pregnant and I got all excited. I crawled into bed (I know it seems normal but soon after ADR, forget about crawling into bed), instead of doing the usual wood log procedure (which i've mastered and now takes less than a second). Then I jumped out of bed and did a few awkward poses whilst talking to my sister. Lesson learned. Don't crawl or do awkward

32 Days Post-Op: Good Improvement + A Reality Discussion

I'm almost 5 weeks into my recovery. I would say everything is going 'by the book'. I'm supposed to be 80% recovered by 6 weeks and 100% by 12 weeks. As one my physios in England put it, the bone will attach to the device by 6 weeks, but it will be solid by 12. He also said nerve pain may need up to 9 months to settle. With this in mind, I can still feel a tiny degree of weakness in the bond between the endplates and the bone. Don't get me wrong, my back feels very strong, but I am hesitant to take my activities a step further given that 6 week guideline. I can feel some pressure in the area every once in a while, especially after strenuous activities like standing or sitting for too long, inciting a small sciatica party down my legs. But these have gotten less severe and more sporadic. They're still there so I try and avoid these activities as much as I can, which makes it difficult considering how boring it might get sometimes. I still need to sleep facing
