I'd say i'm 80%-85% there.

My back is feeling stronger and stronger every day. I'd say that remaining 15% can be divided three ways:
-5% in core strengthening
-5% in nerves healing
-5% in my own confidence in doing more things

I still haven't gone jogging. I feel like i'm not ready yet, mainly because i've been hiding from exercising for the past 2 months. I promise i'll try in the next month.. i'm joining a gym here in Miami!

Nerves are upset sometimes, but most of the time they are wonderful! They usually get upset after a long day of furniture shopping, nothing else.

Overall, everything's great! I'm 100% better than pre-op. I've been out drinking and dancing, and the next day is bliss (except for hangovers of course!).

I promise i'll get on that treadmill soon!

If anyone has any questions, do let me know! I'll answer them ASAP.

  1. Take your time, Mike. If you aren't ready to run, don't do it. If you need to wait a few more months to make sure you are fully healed, then by all means, do that. Glad you are still feeling great and Dr. Boree is on my short list. :)

  3. Mike, glad to see that your ADR surgery has seamed to go well. I've been working with 2 herniated discs for the past 8 years and tried microdiscectomy a year and a half ago but hasn't done what i wanted. I am 23 years old now and love in Arizona. I've been reading a couple of your blogs and been interested in dr. Boeree. I seem to be a little hesitant for stenum... But anyways i wanted your take at the facility that Dr. Boeree has and the integrity of the facility. You can email if you have time, nick.murrieta@gmail.com

    Thanks

  4. Glad you are progressing so well. That's what it's all about... feeling like you're in your 20s again - not your 80s!

  5. Mike,

Did you have any allergy testing done before the procedure for titanium and nickel? I am finding that, although rare, it does exist and I am wondering if Dr. Boree addressed that issue at all with you.

    Thanks,

    ~Kevin

  6. Hi Mike, great blog, keep it going!! Sounds like you are progressing well. One question from me: How long can you spend in a car driving? Do you still feel any discomfort over a certain time period? I'm keen to know this info as I am looking at the same procedure and travel some distance to my place of work (200 miles a day - approx 2-3 hours with congestion) and can be stationary for some time... yeah, I know, ... must be crazy, eh? Looking forward to your reply.

  7. Kevin they did a lot of blood work, but i'm not sure if it included allergy testing. They did ask me plenty of times about allergies and if I was allergic to metals. If you're worried about that i'd ask them if they do any testing pre-op.

As for the other question below, I do drive A LOT as well. I remember driving 6 hours when I was 10 weeks post-op. No pain at all as long as the seat isn't straight up. I also sit a lot on my desk without any pain at all. Sitting DOES make your back hurt eventually, but the normal kind of strain that you get from sitting, and nothing like the old pain.

    Good luck!

  8. Thanks Mike. There is a blood test you can have that can rule out an allergy to various metals, including titanium. I will have to ask Dr. Boree about that if/when I speak to him. I haven't noticed an allergy to any metals so far in my life, but I sure wouldn't want to find out after having it installed. I'm sure you are fine considering an allergic reaction more than likely would already have taken place by now. Thanks for the update and glad you are doing well.

  9. Mike,

Did you ever take Lyrica or Neurontin for your nerve pain before the surgery? What medications were you on? Were you having any tingling, burning, numbness that would come and go in your feet or legs?

    Thanks!

  10. No I didn't take any medication. I took nerve pain as an indication of what activities I should and shouldn't do. Masking it would only make me do things I shouldn't be doing!

I was having tingling down my legs all the time, especially sitting down. I still have some of it, but only minimal because the nerves are still healing.

  11. Exactly my position with my doc. They just keep feeding me pills and I have all those symptoms I asked you about and I just think the disc is "wasted" and it will not heal anymore. Isn't that a resonable conclusion? Doctors think this spine stuff is written in some esoteric language that we cannot understand on the internet... I am asking for a freah MRI at my next appointment due to cold sensations that I get in my thighs when I sit down (things are creeping up to my genetals and I am REALLY none to happy about that, you know, being a guy and all) and to see if things have gotten worse.

Could you post a pic of your incision scarline?

  12. Hi Mike, although you state you are now looking at getting down to some serious exercise/core strengthening, ...at this stage when would you feel confident enough to lift heavy 'free' weights at the gym or use the weight machines for muscle building? ..and what about contact sports? ... Do you invisige you could engage in contact sports again without worrying about taking a 'knock' or falling heavily to the ground & wondering whether the artificial disc would slip at some point in time?
I know everyones different and their bodies react differently, but I'm just trying to get an angle on where YOU see yourself this far post-op.
    Best regards,
